Egyptian papyri & ostraca

Egypt's dry climate preserved an enormous body of everyday documentary writing that rotted away almost everywhere else in the ancient Mediterranean: tax receipts, private letters, contracts, and administrative notes on papyrus and broken pottery (ostraca). This page gathers the large digital databases built from that survival: the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri, the Heidelberg Gesamtverzeichnis, Trismegistos, plus specific well-known caches like the Zenon business archive and the workmen's village at Deir el-Medina. Together they form a single, searchable body of countable texts.

Because these databases record dates, quantities, and place names at real scale, they can carry statistical tests that a handful of famous inscriptions never could. Ice-core money supply and Poisson pyramids both look for a signature of monetary or demographic behaviour in physical remains -- ice-core lead pollution as a proxy for money supply, tomb output as a statistically distributed process. The Arabic rate constant and The Greek lapse rate each fit a language-change or language-loss rate against the dated papyri, treating the corpus as a slow-motion recording of Egypt's shift from Greek to Arabic administration.
