LLM-authored synopsis Not an articleThis page gathers deliberate letter collections: projects such as Epistolae that assemble medieval correspondence, alongside mortuary rolls, the rolling obituary notices monasteries circulated and annotated as they travelled from house to house. Together these form a countable corpus of who wrote to whom, and what survived of it.
Because collected letters preserve authorship and addressee even when the reply is lost, this instrument is particularly suited to questions about whose voice the record kept and whose it dropped. The missing women-to-women mail, Her Latin is suspiciously perfect, and The letter she answered is gone each test a gap in the record of women's correspondence specifically -- letters to other women that rarely survive, suspiciously polished Latin, an abbess's letters read as an institutional voice rather than a personal one, and a reply that never made it into the archive at all.
