The comparative method and natural experiments
Anthropology's controlled comparison and economics' natural-experiment design share one engine: hold context roughly constant across parallel cases, then read the causal signal off the difference between them. The lens finds paired traditions watching the same sky, a paper channel that controls for a parchment shock, naval battles set against land battles, or a royal script imposition that ran as an accidental experiment. What was rhetoric becomes measurement: one case supplies the treatment, its twin supplies the control.
